Hyaluronidase Injection

Occasionally, people are unhappy with the results of their dermal fillers. If you have hyaluronic acid dermal fillers you can wait for your body’s natural hyaluronidase to remove the filler over time, or you can speak to your practitioner about removing them for you.

Other reasons why people might be injected with hyaluronidase is to resolve aesthetic complications, such as asymmetry, lumps and nodules, which can form following treatment. Some very rare but serious complications require immediate action, such as a vascular occlusion (when a dermal filler blocks the blood flow in your vessels) which can lead to necrosis (tissue death) or in very rare circumstances, blindness.

Your medical practitioner in CIDK is the best person to speak to if you are thinking about getting your dermal fillers removed, or if you think you are experiencing any complications after your treatment.

You can be reinjected with dermal filler after you have had the removed! However, you will not be able to do this straight away.

To let your skin settle after the hyaluronidase injections, your practitioner will recommend you wait several weeks before they reinject you again. This will vary amongst individuals and your practitioner will know the best treatment plan for you.

No medical aesthetic treatment comes without a risk, however small, and hyaluronidase is no different.

The common injection-related reactions that might occur include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the injection site. As hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, there is a risk that it can also break down naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid present in your body.

This can potentially impact the quality of the skin in the area, which might not produce a good aesthetic result. Administration of hyaluronidase can also result in anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). A medical practitioner should conduct a thorough consultation to ensure you are suitable for treatment.

It should be noted that hyaluronidase is not a ‘miracle cure’ and just because you have this reversal, it doesn’t mean that you will be fully satisfied with your results.

Hyaluronidase is classified as a drug and is therefore a prescription-only medicine. In the Dubai, as aesthetics is an unregulated market, any practitioner is legally allowed to inject hyaluronidase, however the drug is only available via a prescription from a suitably-qualified medical professional with a prescribing license.

Practitioners who are not prescribers are forbidden to inject hyaluronidase if their patient has not had a face-to-face consultation with a registered prescriber.
